In the opening page of my diary entries appended to the blog about my 1963 European Tour I, there is reference to Cumberland Lodge. That needs some elaboration. The entry refers to our (myself, Hassan, Kanda and Arfin`s) visit to Cumberland Lodge on Sunday 26 May 1963 on the last day of the annual Cumberland Lodge weekend for Lincoln`s Inn students, benchers and young barristers. We had been granted special permission to make the day visit, because the rule was that we were eligible for only one such full weekend at any time and as we (minus Kanda) had been there the year before, we could not spend the whole weekend again.
Cumberland Lodge is situated in the Windsor Great Park, with leafy surrounds and walkways etc. The tradition of Lincoln`s Inn holding such weekend programmes had begun many years ago, with the aim of getting students, budding barristers, senior lawyers and judges to interact with each other in groups and individually over talks, discussions and informal meetings at meals and tea and coffee sessions in a semi-collegiate environment. We three had gone through that experience the year before, 1962, and the photos appended here are from that occasion.
In the first of them, at the top are, from left to right: Mansoor Arfin, Hassan Damji and Me.
In the second, I am first on the left, Hassan next to me, and Lord Denning is fourth on the right.
In the third photo, my head is just about visible (third from the right, next to Lady Denning); Hassan is sixth from the right and Lord Denning is beside him to his right.
In the last one, from left to right are Hassan, Punjani and Me. Punjani also appears in the centre of the second photo. He was from Dar es Salaam and does not feature in my blog about the 1963 tour.
We did not take any photos on our day visit on 26 May 1963, and so there is none of Kanda.
